I'm happy of my IBM, while still single core (1.86 Ghz Pentium M w/1.5 Gb RAM with an RME Multiface II) suits my needs, with the internal 5400 RPM HD I can record 16 tracks at the same time w/reverbs and stuff w/o glitches or dropouts whatsoever -I guess the soundcard plays a role here too- a friend...

FM syntesis is great to create drum sounds, and the ease of use of operators is unbeatable. maybe not *the* best sounding around but you can your job done so quickly... and then you can always treat the samples you did with some serious comp/eqs in an audio editor for example.
