There are compressors with waveform displays that let you see the results of your compression. Had a quick look on kvr and could only find this one which looks a bit sh!t. I've definately seen a nicer one where you could set the threshold in the waveform display but I can't remember what it was call...

They want to know how to make drums like gaiser or minilog or deep dub chords like basic channel or what out of the thousands of VSTs is good or where to get appropriate samples. the problem is not that they ask how to make gaiser drums. its more because they expect to get a certain type of answer ...

It never, ever crops up in these discussions but Applied Accoustics UltraAnalog sounds really fucking good. It's just a two-osc two multimode filter VA but it's got a really nice fat analogue sound. Definitely give it a listen. Good for keys as well.
