Newbie questions:pads,strings and gate

Hello all!
I think those questions sound's stupid for you... But im newbie to production and i am also italian (with a bad english), so... I have searched in the forum without finding anithing that explain me: what is a pads? Seriously, i have also tipe on google "what is a pad in music" and then only thing i find are information about korg kaoss pad... I'm sure that pads are some that i know, but i don't find any explanation that link the english term with the italian definition

So, i appreciate so much if you can give me a definiton of Pad, String and Gate so i can understand what do you mean when you talk about these sounds

pads and strings

refer to ambience

pads being ethereal sounding synths

strings, being stringed instruments like violins cellos synthesized or sampled

gate allow's or stops a certain volume level of a signal to either pass or not pass through it to continue. essentially its a type of filter you can use in your effects chain to route your sounds around.
