grooving mnml...

Post by Electron »

Hi to everybody,

First of all, I'm writing from Spain and my English is really bad, please excuse me for this point.

I'm a real fanatic of mnml music and I'm home producer in this style. In all this time I spend creating electronic music the most difficult point for me is to find out "the groove", this hypnotic combination of bass loop and percussion that makes you can't leave moving up your feet.
What's the secret for you to succeed in groove search?

Theres a lot more to it than only bass loop and percussion.
and I guess, there is no "trick" or "secret" for it, just plain ideas and experimenting.

But well, maybe someone really has "THE MINIMAL GROOVE" in him from birth... :P

the bass and the kick need to play games. they need to talk each other. if not, there is no groove.

I don't know this expression... But I'm agree, with the correct structure the groove raise up alone. I'm not talking about one only structure but a combination of facts are necesary (in my opinion).

don't start analysing grooves and stuff
you'll end up copying people
minimal techno is 4-4 with stuff going on in between, that's the groove
the important thing is to come up with sth you're comfortable with
and be spontaneous when you're in the studio

sometimes mistakes are good and should be left alone

I agree, it's good to have a little bit of a live feel left to it so it doesn't sound all stiff.

As for finding a groove:

If you need to rely on the bassline to carry your track then you have a problem. The best tracks can make people dance by the drums alone. If you have a good drum groove going then the bassline should come pretty easy.

It's ALL about the drums.

only drums? you mean also a kickdrum? if yes your kick is your bass. i often procude basslines with 808 kicks and tuning. so only drums. but without bass or only bum bum bum, i think you can't get the real groove.
