VST organizing in Ableton (tip)

Post by hydrogen »

I was always wondering how to re-organize vsts... i know fruityloops has a built in vst organizer but ableton sort of lacks in this department... anyways... I've figured out a method to organize your vsts, without breaking any important installation links to the software (like presets, registration information, etc).

First I'll state that I'm on a windows platform, so i'm not sure if this will work for osx users.

Basically i build a couple folders with a prefix of 00__.

00__Drums
00__Effects
00__Mastering
00__Synths

Then i build shortcuts to the .dlls in these folders.

When I rescan for vst's or reopen up ableton. I have a clean organized list of all the VSTs that I use. :D

I really need to learn how to use abletons racks more and save racks. I rarely save my own presets other than saving the tracks themselves... and this might be a good time to start this. Anybody know of good methods for backing up your preset racks and where these files get stored on your hd? :?:

I have folders named after the plug-in.
Drop the idea of becoming someone else, because you are already a masterpiece.

No, no, i ment i keep my vsts in separate folders. For instance, one folder named Albino, then Korg, NI, etc.

this is the way it goes (automatically) for audio units. Each instrument/fx goes in a company named folder.
