Basic Synthesis (Reaktor 5) anyone recommend any books?

Post by boredhousehusband »

Hi, I'm new to production, I realise there's a glut of questions on the board from newbies, but just wondering are there any good books on synthesis, that will explain the fundamentals of what to do and how synthesis works.

It could be a book specific to Reaktor 5 or one that is generally going to help. Just want to avoid fucking around without having any idea what I'm doing :)

Check this little video...
http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid= ... reaktor+fm

There are a few other ones.
It will give you hints.... but I strongly suggest you read the manual thoroughly. There are some tutorial ensembles to get you going.

Patience is key here.

I never found a book or anything else than the manual. However, any book on synthesis will help.

Here is something: http://www.crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/techniques.htm

something else http://www.recordlabelrecords.org/norcal.html

Courage my friend... once you start being comfortable, you'll see how empowering this program is.

I've been working on an ensemble for two months now... learning allll the way.

:D

Edit: Something that helped me get around syntrhesis basics... (sorry for lazily quoting myself from another forum)
For learning synthesis, I cannot think of anything better than what follows:

Go there: http://www.clavia.se

Grab the G2Modular demo for your platform (you can save your patches with it!... don't forget to set the sample rate to 96khz)

Then grab this:

http://www.cim.mcgill.ca/~clark/nordmod ... k_toc.html

It's a book about synthesis with the older generation of Nord modulars... but aside from a few different modules, it's all the same.

Then after that... Reaktor! ...of wich's learning curve is ,by much, steeper I find.

Enjoy!

And don't be afraid to ask questions! I myself am not very advanced in sythesis.. I know the basics... and the Nord demo was key in my case.

Later man!

Edit:Beware... the Nord's sound quality is absolutely jaw-dropping... you will want one for sure.
Yeah... I advise you check that out first.

If your a total newbie to synthesis id start with something a lot simpler than Reaktor.

or at the very least only look at some of the basic synths and once you know exactly what all the buttons do move onto something more advanced.

Drop the idea of becoming someone else, because you are already a masterpiece.

yeah, I'd drop Reactor for a few years. Start with something easy(er).

I recommend u start with Synth Secrets from Sound On Sound: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may99/a ... nthsec.htm

http://www.zwhome.org/~lonce/ResourcesL ... Links.html (also features all Synth Secrets articles)

i have a very different idea from the most of you guys.

i think it's a lot better to start with a system like a Reaktor/MaxMsp,
so that instead of get stucked in presets and layers of knobs/faders that you don't even know what to do with,
you can understand really step by step, from one sinewave osc. to complex multi LFO modulation structure...etc.

it's from my personal exp., for a long time, i was using something like FM7 without a single try to patch anything myself...

people can be veeeeeeeeery lazy, you know...

Much respect to you thats a good attitude to have. FM synthesis is a beast.

But theres no harm in looking at presets. I have learnt a lot from seeing how other people have done things.
