GEAR - for a newbie on a budget

Post by potatoes »

Hi!

I am about to take production more seriously and would like your opinion/suggestions on my (budget) choice of equipment to go with my laptop.

I am going to be djing with Traktor, doing live performances and production with Ableton Live and producing also with FruityLoops and Reason.

External soundcard: TerraTec Phase 26 - USB Audio and Midi-Interfacehttp://productsen.terratec.net/modules. ... le&sid=159
Around 150 Euros..

Midi controller: Evolution UC 33http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/UC33e-main.html
Around 230 Euros.

I also need to buy speakers but havent got the money to buy proper studio reference speakers...
What do you reccomend as a solution in the meanwhile?

Thanks a lot for any help, hope its interesting for other newbies as well!

yeah, don't use several sequencers - learn one, and learn it well.

totally agree with fredrik_h.
ableton live backed with some good vst plugs is a powerful solution.

no budget for studio monitors:
use a pair of hi-fi monitors instead or good headphones, quit smoking,
and buy yourself some good nearfield monitors when possible.
do not buy cheap ones instead.
wait and buy solid ones becauise they'll last a life.

I read somewhere that when you're on a budget, you're better off with passive monitors + amplifier, instead of active monitors. Budget active monitors tend to be of crappy quality, while cheaper passive ones + amp are a bit better and more easily upgradeable.
