I play live with the "poor" 5400 rpm HD of my thinkpad and I still have to have glitches or dropouts on stage.
I even recorded 14 tracks in realtime on the "poor" HD with no problems...

same here - never had speed problems with the built in 5400 drive in my laptop. 12 stereo tracks (24 audio tracks) is no problem for the drive and if you ever run into troubles try to activate the RAM switch on some clips in the same row - so they get played from ram.
24 tracks @ 44.1khz 16 bit = 2.02 mb/s which is far below the limits of even very old harddrives.
plus i'm glad about every every gram i don't have to carry with me
