i would say, to understand each other better.
i mean you had barok, renaissance music, classicism, and so on, so every genre is representing a certain time in history.
now everything is minimal minimal, probably representing the current state of the people.

but i may be just talking out of my ass.

Thanks for listing them out, am doing intensive listen from Beatport now.

And i do agree that having a clear boundary between genres would limit music production (i am not producer, just love to listen and dance to), but i need some sense of distinction to more understand the music, this way its easier for me to describe what do i like about each track i listen to. Though i should have an open ear, if its good, then i just like it.

By defining, there are only limits created to fit within a definition, not to creation itself. New definitions can and always do rise. When in doubt, progressive and fusion work for more conversation :)

MINIMAL IS Richie Hawtin, Magda, Marc Houle, Troy Pierce! MINIMAL IS MINUS. It was invented around 2001 by Richie Hawtin with his MINUS label and since then nice people like Magda and Troy brought minimal music to the masses. It's great music for being on drugs and looking cool.

just to add some strange thoughts to the debate:

everytime i heard those timbaland productions for justin timberlake and nelly furtado, i thought something like: "well that sounds pretty minimal".

so, is "minimal" much like an expression (or a prefix) like "hardcore"? you find hardcore in many different genres, like punk rock/metal or even hip hop/rap.
maybe next year we get "minimal porn"!
