Question about kicks/drums

stay away from compressing the kick, it will take you nowhere.

Right... but I think you can't just deminish the idea of compressing kicks like this. There are few times when it can help like over Compressing an 808 to make the tail never drop out.

I think it just depends on what your going for, but your right at the bottom line. Don't bother with compressing the kick unless you are going for a specific effect.

Is Battery comparable to Reason's Redum?

In a way, yes. But, battery has a lot more functionality than redrum.
Sample processing, fx, output routing, layering,...
Also you don't have a built-in sequencer in battery.

I use Nativew Instruments "BATTERY" Vst for my drums. It has a great little compressor on it that works wonders for kick drum samples.

Try using a compressor vst on your kick drum. Solo the kick out turn youe sub up a bit and just mess around with the compressor and youll find that one kick noise can be turned into damn near any kick noise.

You can also try using an eq and putting a spike on certain frequencies to give it that extra punch in the sweet spot.

I don't know I use cubase but from what I do know Battery is preety much the industry standard for doing drums.

I like battery you can get the demo for free from the native instruments website, so there's no excuse for not checking it out...
