I use Ableton.
I usually draw a bassline and the drums, using one of the HAL's or a VST.
Now I cant rid myself of the feeling that everything sounds a little bit different in Ableton, compared to f.i Reason.
I really can't seem to make a decent kick (the thing they usually put on beat 2 and 4 within a bar), it just doesn't sound good.
I've been trying to make them sound like Dapayk's, but they sound "too short" and if i try to stretch the notes it doesn't seem to make any difference...whatever effect I use it just keeps souding flat and uninteresting.
How do you guys make those? Btw I dont have a MIDi keyboard
Question about kicks/drums

What you need is a rim shot!
what are your shuffle settings set to? set them to straight or 16...
your next thing is that probably don't have beefy sounds. and you've got to eq them.
Sometimes it also helps to layer the bass over the kick. Use some sidechain or eq to let the sound bleed into it. There is quite a bit of information about that here. search sidechain, and eq.
rhythm and bass is probably the hardest thing to get right. stay focused and be diligent.

try to make kicks with the operator...there you can make them longer or shorter, more bassy...etc.
operator is very nice tool mess around with it till you get some nice kicks.

well, the sidechaining sure did the trick in this case! thanks for the help!
I haven't really gotten to work with operator yet...and those times i did werent really productive, but i'm gonna practice it in the near future!
btw, wouldn't it be handy if there were some sort of a sticky where people could ask how to make a certain sound? i mean it's not stealing samples or anything, just passing the wisdom of how certain sounds are made...would save me lot's of time and frustration

is much better when you learn by yourself how to do certain soundsferd wrote: btw, wouldn't it be handy if there were some sort of a sticky where people could ask how to make a certain sound? i mean it's not stealing samples or anything, just passing the wisdom of how certain sounds are made...would save me lot's of time and frustration
