Is the Minimal/Modern look played out?
Everything now has a white background and a sans serif font. A giant gird structured foooter with empty space. I blame Apple and Facebook. Way to ruin the modern look. Now modern art and minimalism is an eye sore.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
the minimalistic mod style has been around since the 70's, especially in fashion/art/architecture. It's only natural that the web and ui would follow suite accordingly.
personally, I like a clean, well organized layout that is easy to comprehend. cluttered and crammed design is just bad, however there is good and bad design in everything, regardless of style.
ps. saying "played out" is played out.

Agree, the style has been around for a long time. The presentation layer should be dressed for the audience, but the clean, clear presentation of information is always paramount.

I respect people who can do minimal design the right way especially using text with grids. Its not an easy thing to do.
