Again affirming our dedication to the Detroit underground, we are proud to present Norm Talley, renaissance man of the new Detroit renaissance, lynchpin of the Beatdown Brothers and a true player of the city’s subterranean house circle. He’s been at it for years now with his legendary releases on Track Mode, Third Ear, Sushitech and many more, and with fellow soldiers Delano Smith and Mike “Agent X” Clark they’ve made an underground house legacy parallel to and distinct from forefathers Rick Wade, Theo Parrish, and Moodymann. So get ready to get beat down because we’re bringing you Detroit House at its finest!
Transmissions sends us four intercepted signals from the mothership hovering over the Motor City primed for the peak-time dancefloor that range from outer space techno trips to alien hip-shaking deep house. Opener “Man on the Moon” sets a steady pace with techno drums and broken beat accents as the extraterrestrial ray guns zap haters and fakers off of the floor. It doesn’t stick around for long, but it’s fair warning to anyone who makes it into “Pulsate”: get ready, the Beatdown is coming. The hustle-house funky rhythm of this number is sure to get some backsides moving down below the ship, and clean, crisp snares and hats make this a propulsive little ditty that customs has to clear into the DJs interstellar luggage. With “Space Travla”, we indeed blast off into spacier territory with a stuttering bass attack and cosmic ray synthesizers that give us a deep, intergalactic vibe suitable for all late-night astral travelers. “Tell Me”(Late Night Creeper Mix) beams its message down to the gyrating crowd with funky toms, earth-shaking bass and a few stray radio signals from the home world thrown into the groove alongside the pealing synths to complete our close encounters of the third kind.
With this, we round off our second voyage into the inner and outward realms of the Motown underground with 4 tracks from yet another underappreciated and understated talent of that city’s top tier. There’s no fads here and no so-hip move faking, just quality in its purest form, and that alone can seem alien back on Earth in these times…
