Want professional advice for your music?

Post by Kim Lajoie »

Hi!

My name's Kim Lajoie - author of http://kimlajoie.wordpress.com. Some of you are readers and subscribers. Glad you find it useful!

I'm just dropping in to let you know that I also provide specialised one-on-one advice. I have a private forum called 'The Kitchen' where I provide specific detailed advice to members.

If you:
- sometimes get confused about issues relating to songwriting or engineering
- can't seem to break through to the next level
- are frustrated with conflicting (or vague) tips and tricks that don't have the effect you're after

... you should join the Kitchen. In the Kitchen you get my professional advice and guidance for your songs and musical goals.

The Kitchen costs money. Professional one-on-one advice doesn't come free. If you want free advice, this is not for you. On the other hand, if you believe you get what you pay for, and you're serious about your music, send me an email to:

kitchen at kimlajoie dot com

As always, my blog will always remain free - so if you want some general advice on a particular topic, I can't think of a better place to go:

http://kimlajoie.wordpress.com

I'll be hanging around here, so reply in this thread if you have any questions.

yes it does.

isnt that the whole point of a production forum, where more experienced producers help beginners for free.

Forums are great - I regularly contribute to several forums. As you know, they're particularly good for getting a wide range of opinions and ideas.

I've been contributing to forums for years. And I will continue to do so. Still, they're not perfect. My main issues with forums are:

1) It's sometimes difficult to tell who's who - especially when there is lots of conflicting advice. Some might be coming from experiences professionals, other advice might be coming from someone who's only been at it for a few years. It's easy to got *lots* of answers, but more difficult to get the *right* answers.

2) Free advice is great, but there's also a place for paid advice. Things start to get difficult when someone asks a question and I could write several hundred words about it. Do I do that for everyone? This is actually the reason I started my blog (http://kimlajoie.wordpress.com) - because many of the questions were being asked over and over again. The Kitchen goes even further - specific advice for *your* song, *your* situation.

If you don't want detailed advice, that's cool. No hard feelings. Keep in mind, though, that there *are* people who want tailored advice, and they're willing to pay for it (if it's high quality, of course!).

that sounds like an infomercial, my free advice: get it aired, and sod off.

no offense but this seems like a weak attempt to imitate the commercial audio tutoring branch. even they don't post these 'ads' here.

9/10 for the idea 3/10 for the implementation. keep practicing young grasshopper.

my 2 cents.

there's a lot of good information buried in this frum. Enough to give people the resources that they need to learn to produce (combined with intent/effort, obviously). much of this info is even specifically tailored to specific questions.

A lot of the information is contained within long and open dialogues spreading many pages with contributions from all different kinds of people.

I have paid people for services in music, including tuition on some specific topics (maxmsp!). For me, the money isn't the issue. If the cost is justified I will find a way to make it work.

So, I don't want to criticise this service for being paid. However, i think it's very rude to simply show up on this forum, without obviously taking the time to see what kind of stuff happens here. And say that you are offering better info than what is avaialble.

You've kinda shot yourself in the foot there a bit. And saying, that it's hard to tell the difference between someone who knows what they're talking about, and someone who doesn't. Well, for me I've posted here for several years, but even when I first posted here it was pretty obvious who knew their sh!t, and who didn't. And it's pretty obvious someone showing up with only 1 or 2 posts selling something.

[edit. sorry this probably comes across as pretty hostile. you seem friendly and knowledgeable. i'm just saying my 2 cents here and partially it's directed at far worse offenders than this post]

My latest release isn't electronic (mostly), but it can give you an idea of my chops: http://kimlajoie.bandcamp.com/

It was released in May this year. I've got a few projects that are more electronic, but they won't be released until next year. You can get a bit of an overview of what I'm working on here: http://obsessive-music.com

I'm also helping a few people in the Kitchen who are working on electronic music. They've found my advice valuable.

Of course, you can also get a sense of how well I can explain concepts and techniques by reading my blog: http://kimlajoie.wordpress.com/

I realise my recent releases aren't primarily electronic - but the reason I'm here is because *other people* on this forum have been linking to my blog. Seems to me there are people here who'd like my help.

Cheers. Like I said - people have found my blog useful, and they've also found my one-on-one support to be useful too. It's not for everyone, but it's there for those who do like that kind of assistance.
