Good Random Delay Plug-in

Post by db2 »

I have used/modified some good msp patches which implement a very nice random delay system. The various delays are controlled by buttons which choose the time division, these are layed out like 16, 32, 64, 128, etc. Then you can choose a random progression through these delay rates, without glitches or clicks. then you have your feedback controls which you can also set random ranges, max/mins, etc, for. You get very interesting effects when the delays are changing rates as they feedback off and combine, very interesting sounds. Sometimes I will take a sound and process it through the random delay in various ways, but I'm really surprised that a plug in like this has not been developed, seeing as I've seen it implemented in several max apps, so people out there know the basic structure of this. I've seen/used some other random delay plugins, but nothing gets the correct rhythmic effects I'm looking for. Anyone know what I'm talking about, or have examples? I could post some later from home. Just looking for any info on this.

I don't think you'll get anything close to the functionality of a max/msp patch.

but a delay with an lfo on delay time (use sah mode) might do the job. there are plenty that can do this.

I don't have my older machine with the patches on me but here are two examples made with two different patches.

This first one is harder to follow but you can hear the delay times and feedback randomize as the sound progresses. The auto pan feature is a bit annoying and can be turned off:

This second one the delay settings are tighter and its from a different app, but still utilizes some random delay:

I have tried effectrix and it's not quite the same, but I hear you on the suggestion. My biggest problem with effectrix when compared to glitch, or major malfunction, is that it doesn't have a randomize step parameter. This means that instead of filling in stutter, or delay, you can click random for a step and it chooses from the active effects. I know it has a randomizer for the modulation of each effect parameter but thats not the same as having a random step option. It's SO freaking simple to implement too. If effectrix had it I'd be completely sold (NOT for the effect I'm describing in this post, but just in general.

BTW, the effect in those examples is not being tweaked at all, its just running off its randomize parameters that are left alone.
