Synthesizing those lush techno chords...

Post by nrjizer »

Hello folks... I've been lurking this production sub-forum for a while since it tends to be full of good discussion, so I figured this would be a good place to ask:

I've been trying to synthesize the sort of lush chord sounds that you hear in a lot of techno / deep house tracks, like in this track, or this one, or this one. I haven't had much luck, unfortunately. I'm using Logic 8 with all of it's standard plugins, plus the FM8 and Massive. Is there some particular method to synthesizing these sorts of sounds that I'm missing?

Also, are there any particular hard or soft synths that are good for these sorts of sounds? I'm in the market for a new synth as it is.

Use any polyphonic subtractive synthesizer really. Set the oscilators to sawtooth and start out with a three note minor chord and then adjust the filter on it, so its not so high in the mix... and throw some more filters and parametrics on it. Try some reverb with some filter processing after the verb too... so many different ways man... haha... its not going to come through in one preset. experiments like mr. steevio always says.

if your looking for specific synths... a lot of these actually sound like massive... but try other subtractive synths... synth1, alpha, cs80, minimoog, prophecy, etc... so many your gonna sh!t your pants when you try to narrow it down... because there are so many uses and niches for each brand.

Hi there!

Well u got tons of those chords man, they are all included with Logic 8, just browse ur loops section, hit the search ->> chord / chords and u have all u need, just pull a loop in the arrangement and delete the loop event so u can play the chord by youself...have fun =)

I am in the same boat...

Its easy enough to create a generic chord sound, but to make it stand out / blend in is the hard part........ some of rozzo's chord programming make me moist, i its liike there peaking around 400hz but are really clear??????

As hydrogen said, saw waves are a start, min, min7 & min9 chords sound most suitable imo....

Sorry but who is this Rozzo guy?

I have the FM7 - was doing a bit of chord-sound work on it last night. As soon as I get home from work, I'm straight back on it. Very striking sounds and interestingly tweakable in the Easy Edit panel. I wish I knew more about FM.

So seeing as the FM8 was mentioned in the original post, I reckon that should do the trick.

Of course Synth1 is always great also.
