Albert Hoffmann 'LSD — My Problem Child'
Hoffmann tells the story how he discovered his magic substance and how it felt like using it... There are some trip reports by his fellow scientists too... Interesting read.
Writers on drugs...
I agree on dck and especially "The three stigmatas of Palmer Eldritch". really trippy book!
There's also no way around William S. Burroughs, especially "Naked Lunch". The film by David Cronenberg is also highly recommended.
Also check out "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller. It's about WW-2 and not really about drugs, but it's so weird and insane, it actually shows the reality of war as the insanity of a drug trip. One of the best books I know.
If you like Poe check out Japanese writer Edogawa Rampo. He was hugely influenced by Poe (as his artist's name shows) and his stories are even more crazy!
