'On the run' by Pink Floyd - how did they do it?

Post by Ingemar »

the third track on the 'dark side of the moon' album is pretty sweet eh. In fact it really boggles my mind as to how they did it. I mean it was released in 1973 or so but still it sounds so "modern" (not only would it qualify as a techno track but it also has what sounds like filter automation and synthesised high hat percussion).

Just because I'm curious: does anybody know what hardware they had back then and how they used it?

there is a DVD on the making of dark side of the moon. I can't remember what synth it was but my uni has got one. the synth was connected to a sequencer. everyone in the band and Alan Parsons had their hands on the mixing desk to get the automation the way they wanted.

Yeah, that music is great!

There were not only sequencers around back then, but very soon thereafter there were even ones with light-pens and monitors that allowed you to edit midi on screen.

As far as filter automation goes, back then of course they just did what we all should do more of today: turn the knob live by hand and screw it!

It was actually an EMS Synthi A. The one with the membrane keybed and suitcase style housing. It was a 8 note sequence, with the sequencer tempo turned way up. The notes are:

E3, G3, A3, G3, D4, C4, D4, E4 I think...
