kick and snares an unhappy couple?

Post by Opuswerk »

Hello knowledgeable people,

I was wondering how you managed to get the kik and the snare to sit nicely in th mix, without having the snare peaking above the kick.
Any suggestions as to how to achieve a powerfull kick and snare, but keeping the volume under control?

couldn't sleep so just got up... looks like im catching the american part of the board online...

compress the snare. if you want to see how much it should be compressed, you can perform a simple trick - take a part of a (well produced) track where you have one hit of only the kick, and one hit of kick/snare together. line them up in your editor so you have both starting at the same point, then flip the kick's phase and mix them at 100% each. that will leave you with only the snare. see how it doesnt have any attack? :)

p.s. don`t sample that snare now!

If your tunes quite driving, side chain the snare from the kick (itll give that clunk sound like youve move it forward a couple of ticks)..

and/or

compress the fucker, 4;1 ratio, fastest attcack, med release, -10 threshold....

I couldnt sleep either,is there a full moooon?

i wouldn't really compress a snare with 4:1... (not with the fastest attack, cause otherwise the snare will be pressed to the background in the mix)
if you put the attack on 40 ms or something then itll snap out of the speaker with the shortest release. Itll get a snappy sound.

i just use the eq and make a lowcut at the snare. I cut the 30hz - 100 hz at the snare so it wont fight anymore with the kick ( the kick is on 100hz ).

another thing about compression : if you compress something really hard. you cant pump up the volume that much anymore.. so itll be quite a quiet snare that clips quite easy if you pump up the volume to a 'normal' level so you can hear it clearly

best tip ever, thank you so much for showing me this. its true the snare doesn't have any really attack.
So iguess the whole trick resides in finding a kick and a snare that wok well together. ie a kick which atack and click can be used as the real beginning of the snare. And the snare just needs to be modulated with a good enveloppe.

Thanks!
