Montreal's own Jean-Patrice Remillard, who records as Pheek, has spent eight years building a solid catalogue of albums, EPs, singles, and remixes in a variety of formats. He began releasing tracks in 1999, and by 2001 had released his first album, Pheekology 101. The following year, Remillard started his own label, Archipel, which released his second album, Inadvertance, as a CD-R.
Though it may seem commonplace now, Pheek was among the earliest proponents of the netlabel, routinely issuing singles and EP's throughout the first years of this decade as mp3's, on such early netlabels as Thinner, Epsilonlab, and Clever Music, without the benefit of a vinyl or CD precedent. In 2006, he released a third album, En Légère Suspension. As the years pass, Pheek's brooding mix of the minimal and experimental sides of techno has grown increasingly distinct, as has his ear for spotting new talent, such as Jesse Somfay.
