at the mo our board is being assaulted by spam mailers who register and then post links to crap. its a nightmare. if your 5000 are all kids into mnml and not just spammers werd.

We have the same problem here, but we delete them every day.
There are some fixes for it by the way:

Anti Robotic Registration Flood

This hack will add a piece of graphical-text on the registration form and user will have to copy into a text field (it is very similar to many free web hosting signup forms).

This hack will give your forum an added level of security.

Block Bad Bots

This simple robots.txt file will help deter some of the unwanted bots that spider your site for email addresses and things of that nature that result in spam.

This works for all websites and it is not just limited to phpBB. This has also been configured to allow Google AdSense bots to spider your site if you use the program.

Easy BotStopper

This is a simple program to stop spam bot registrations. It removes the website field upon registration (but it can be added after the user has registered) so humans will not be affected. Bots cannot see that the website field has disappeared however and the hack picks this up and stops the registration process.

thanks.. will pass them on to our admin. luckily we have stopped most bots and now only manual spammers can get through... but as you know its a major pain.

with 5000 registered users,if just half of them start a new topic each week,its gonna be 10000 topics in a month!!!

and I think whats Kiwi said about deleting non-active users is right
