Re: Analogue mixers
i think digital and analogue clipping are very similar, where the capacity of the machinary to "hold" audio information is exceeded. I guess some engineers once would have said that analogue clipping was awful until some kids like Dave Davies came and turned it up too loud.
Analogue clipping is much more interesting to me though than digital clipping.

Re: Analogue mixers
What happens when it's exceeded is different though - analogue systems distort gradually with more harmonics being introduced the more the system's pushed, whereas with digital it's either too hot (i.e. hitting 0 dBFS) or it's not.oblioblioblio wrote:i think digital and analogue clipping are very similar, where the capacity of the machinary to "hold" audio information is exceeded.
I see your point though, it's the same thing as far as the basic definition is concerned, and no doubt digital clipping was named after its analogue counterpart.

Re: Analogue mixers
it's completely true that analog summing is beneficial for a mix. i bought a dangerous D-Box summing mixer last year and it was a game changer, not just for the sound of my mixes but it makes working on music in a DAW much more enjoyable and you get more done as a result. i used to spend countless hours fucking with plugins to make space like that but you never come close.
i think it's down to the fact that if you are summing through a master bus of a DAW, the channels don't get fully realized as independent dynamic signals because they're being interpolated into a single waveform by the computer in real time. if you send tracks out to a mixer each channel can utilize the full dynamic range of the converters. it sounds better and you can get MORE VOLUME with analog summing
