mpc2000xl upgrade or trade in for mpc1000?

Post by hydrogen »

I came across a great deal on an mpc2000xl w/o effects board. I'm just wondering if i should ebay it and get a more modern mpc1000? or should i just retrofit it with a memory card unit?

I say stick with the 2000xl because the 1000 doesn't do Midi Time Code. The only expansions i think you should really put on it are the 8 output expansion and the memory expansion. The main 2 things that tend to wear out on it are the screen and the slider. the slider is cheap to replace bu the screen can get ridiculous. Another thing i like about the 2000xl is the swing, for some reason the 1000 doesn't swing quite the same but the 2500 and the 5000 seem to.

If you are thinking of selling it Id have a look at the NI maschine option. Its a hell of a bit of kit especially if you like the MPC way of working.

get the 2000xl, I have mine since it came out
and love the swing of it, got a 1000 last year too
and sold it after a week, the swing is different,
pads are smaller, and there are so many functions
you have to hold shift and hit a pad etc.
I think the workflow is so much better with a 2000xl.

I was buying the 1000 for taking it out on the road with me
and the ability to use SD cards to transfer and save the samples.
But the feel wasn´t the same.

MPC1000 with JJos.
Portable, great sound, great swing, usable internal FX and filters, lot of memory, great OS. You really get a lot for the money.

Previous owner of MPC 2000, 2000xl, 4000 and 60.

JJOS does MTC. No point getting one without JJOS anyway :)

The effects board on the 2kxl = TEH SUCK.

If you do go with the xl, just get the output expander.

It is a great sequencer, I really wish I had one right now. They are getting so cheap these days.

Thanks guys! It has the 8 out expansion/32meg memory. I'm mainly looking to build my drum kits on it and for its different swing abilities. I picked it up for super cheap($100) in solid condition, dude just wanted to get rid of it.

Now just have to hook up os 1.2 on it and get a flash drive so i can transfer samples to it. or just get a stack of floppies and sample from the RME... Might actually do this first. <3

Cheers!
