Getting the bass around you?

Post by juuso »

Hi all,

I've been thinking about this for a while and I though I'd ask whether someone here might know or have some knowledge or an idea on this matter. I listen to a lot of techno and try to sometimes make my own with fl studio.

One thing that always gets me wondering is how do the professionals get their bass to sound so that it sounds that it's all around you instead of kinda just being in front of you? Does it have something to do with stereo imaging? Is it purely a reverb thing? Or what? And are there some plugins you could recommend? Or videos on youtube on this thing? Or a topic here that I should read where this has already been discussed.

It feels so stupid putting this question into words, but here's a couple of examples of what I mean in which the bass sounds are kind of all around you nicely (e.g. in revulzion II):

are these the tracks you posted? man...

should try both of those things you mentioned. but there is plenty of stereo sh!t going on, its not just in the bass... Melda Stereo Generator is great for making this type of wide sound

look up any stereo widening tricks on youtube there are lots of them.

Hi, thanks for the tip! I'll check it out. It was the second track from the planetary assault system and the A2 track from Judas. Similar type of really wide and nice basses is e.g. this: https://soundcloud.com/abyssrecordings/symmetry. I kind of have an idea how that kind of sound is made, but what I don't know is how to make the sound pop like that. My sound usually gets too muddied. That's why I was thinking that it might be a stereo image thing, but I'm just wondering whether the stereo thing is done on just the reverb or on the whole kick reverb thing.
