did you know where that term comes from...? if not I've actually witnessed it... its also where the term tie the knot comes from too..

few of my friends are a bit 'hippy' and have had handfastings, essentially a pagan wedding...

in these you get your hands tied together with ropes to symbolise the bond between you... and the jumping of the broom is done at the end of the ceremony to 'break' the circle the handfasting was done in...
