His name is Shadi Megallaa.
The Middle East isn’t exactly known for it’s thousands of electronic music producers. That’s the reason why we were knocked even harder off our feet, when we first heard Shadi. But even if he was born and bred in Detroit or Chicago, we would still be impressed by his excellent work.
Born in Cairo, Egypt, this 27 yr old was raised in Abu Dhabi on the shores of the Persian Gulf. With no inspiration anywhere at hand, Shadi remembers his first introduction to electronic music at 14, when his friend’s older brother brought back mix tapes from drum’n’bass parties in London. And a couple of years later he came across a CD mixed by Sasha & John Digweed.
Shadi was blown away by the complexity of musical layering and finally became fully immersed in playing music upon his move to Lawrence, Kansas in 1997. Shadi has now returned to the UAE to complete his degree and to educate the people in the region about electronic music.
In August 2005, he and Matt Tolfrey started the Leftroom label.
Shadi gives us 3 tracks, and J Hunsberger has remixed one of them. Hunsberger is widely known for releases on various labels. He is one of the key players on the Canadian minimal scene (in conjunction with Mike Shannon, Jeff Milligan and Akufen).
The Spot (J Hunsberger Remix):
First track on the record is Hunsbergers remix of ‘The Spot’. He has taken the track into the deep realm of minimal house/techno, but has also made it a highly addictive dancefloor killer.
The Spot:
This track reminds us of some old DBX’ish 1995 minimal techno, but it is 2006 UAE techno featuring Shadi’s own vocal. This track features bleeps, blops and all sorts of quirkyness - but ROCKS no less.
Werk It:
Another excellent Shadi full-on interpretation of Chicago - again featuring his own vocal.
Small Town Blues:
A bit different than the other tracks, showing Shadi’s versatility. With its more moody deepness, it’s no surprise to hear that he made this at a dark time, when a certain person was a pain.

Ganz schön fusselig beginnt diese EP mit einem J. Hunsberger Mix, der sich langsam zu einem echt freakig minimalen Cutupfunkspezialisten entwickelt hat und einen hier absolut überzeugt, nicht nur weil da mittendrin die Stimme mit Küchenhall perfekt passt. Das Orginal kommt direkt hinterher und ist einiges langsamer und deeper, wenn auch genau so Kleinteilig und mindestens doppelt so versponnen in der Art wie hier unerwartet Effekte die Vorherrschaft über alles übernehmen und trotzdem den Groove nicht kleinkriegen. Auf der Rückseite gibt es glücklicherweise noch zwei Tracks von diesem neuen Wahnsinnigen Risingstar in der Szene der minimalen Frickler. "Werk it" bombt einen mit seiner verklippten Bootneurose völlig in eine andere Welt und für alle die etwas elegischeres lieber haben gibt es noch den unglaublichen Schmachtfetzen eines reduziert knisternd knabbernden Grooves "Small Town Blues". Ich bin Fan von Shadi Magellaa.
