Leftroom April update, Don't Be Leftout!!!

Post by tolfrey »

Hello to all, hope you have all had a good start to the year, and for those of you who were in Miami, I hope recovery is going well. There is a lot of exciting news to get through, so make yourselves comfortable and get a cup of tea if your into that kind of thing.

The recent Miami Winter Music Conference has just encountered the launch of Leftroom’s new sublabel, Leftroom Limited. Music wise it is going to bring a new dimension to Leftroom as a whole, concentrating on anything that wobbles from straight up house, to techno and even the uplifting. First up is Tolfrey & Sylvester presents: Popeye – Spinach Disko, a slow brewing, techy, disco record, with a breakdown that needs to be heard to be understood. This has had some major support behind the decks and on radio so keep an ear out. The remix comes courtesy of new kids, AudioJack, and is a stripped down, jackin, sample ridden affair.

A date to pencil in for your diaries is the up and coming festival Encompass in London. On the nights of Thursday 11th, Friday 12th and Saturday 13th of May seven venues will host official label showcases in the surrounding Shoreditch area alongside the workshop and seminars that will take place during the day of Saturday 13th May at Shoreditch Town Hall.

This year the line-up once again reads like a who’s who of electronic and leftfield music. These include label showcases from NON-STOP, TUMMY TOUCH, WARP, LOOSE CHANGE, DC RECORDINGS, CHANNEL ZERO, FACTOR CITY, TIRK, INNERVISIONS, COMPOST, TYKE, SOMA, BORDER COMMUNITY, SAMURAI.FM, GHOSTLY and last but not least, your friendly neighborhood, LEFTROOM. We are hosting the bar area of 93 Feet East on Saturday 13th from 7pm till 1am and it will feature a live set from Inxec (Leftroom/Contexterrior), and dj sets from Matt Tolfrey (Leftroom/Crossotown Rebels), MarcAshken (Leftroom/Safari Electronique), Ed Davenport (Leftroom/Gumption) and Jay Kilka (Leftroom/Technique.) Soma are hosting the main room, so this will be one hell of a party. For anymore information please go to www.encompass-london.com

February saw the release of Leftroom 002 with our main man Pheek at the controls with his ‘Use With Care’ ep. We received stunning reviews from all the big hitters including Slam, Dominik Eulberg, James Holden, MANDY, Craig Richards, and DJ Chloe and hence it was another sell out. With a repress imminent, it won’t be long till you see Pheek playing around on Leftroom again…

Next up, hitting the shelves on April 10th is Leftroom 003…

Following the success of his debut track Part Time Isolation on the imprint, and his recent Acinom ep on Safari Electronique, new-kid on the woodblock, MarcAshken returns to Leftroom Records delivering the much-anticipated “With a ‘C’ ep”. Samples can be found on www.leftroom.com in the releases section.

The opening track: ‘Gransha’ builds from the first flat kick and whispered vocal, soon introducing the glitchy and textured production that is the hallmark of both Ashken and Leftroom. By the time the squelching almost acid bass drops, the listener is already carried along by that inescapable, bouncing lick. I hope you’ve brought your dancing shoes.

‘Size 3’ is simply one of those tracks that demands full attention. The chunky bass line rolls along growing to an infinite crescendo, punctuated only by shuddering industrial groans and incisive handclaps. This gives way to what can only be described as a monster breakdown, simultaneously grimy and euphoric. This has to be heard to be believed.

Track 3: ‘Hair Up High’ is a shoulder-twitching ride that draws on all of Ashken’s production skill to produce a truly funky record that still has the depth of sound that keeps crowds bouncing long into the night. Pure Leftroom. This track is featured on forthcoming CD, Craig Richards and Transparent Sound ‘Two Headed Monster' on Orson.

The E.P. closes with the dark groove of ‘0I0’ which fuses a hypnotic kick with a driving snare that just says: “Here come the funk”. Ashken does not disappoint dropping the coolest of vocals and a sub-bass that resonates with the sort of intensity that makes you wonder if it’s inside you.

Marc’s ep will be followed in May by Leftroom new boy, Ed Davenport under his Szenario guise. Check out his debut release on Gumption to hear the young mans talent. His ‘Reaction Timing’ ep for Leftroom features two stunning tracks by Ed and also two remixes by men of the moment, Ryan Crosson (Minus/Telegraph) and Franco Cinelli (Milnor Modern/Hello? Repeat.) More information to follow, but trust us, this is going to blow up!!!

Thank you to all that made it down to the launch night of Leftout at the T-Bar in Shoreditch in March. MarcAshken did a stunning job with warm up after his sambuca session at the bar, and Matt Tolfrey filled the dancefloor nicely for James Holden to take centre stage. The place was absolutely rammed, and atmosphere was madness.

The next installment is on Thursday 13th April from 8pm onwards, with Craig Richards, Glimpse Live and Matt Tolfrey. Craig needs no introduction, as one of the musical directors and Saturday night residents of London super club Fabric, you know exactly what to expect from his record box. Glimpse have been in the spotlight recently with rave reviews about their tracks on their very own Glimpse Recordings imprint, and they have been championed by jocks such as Magda, Troy Pierce and Ricardo Villalobos. Their show is insane, and it will be the first live set to ever to take place at the T-Bar. Matt Tolfrey is also on hand for warm up duty. This is the start to a heavy Easter weekend, so get resting now and get polishing those dancing shoes. April’s poster and pictures from March Leftout can be found at http://www.leftroom.com/flyers/tbar.html

Some up coming Leftroom party dates in April featuring head honcho Matt Tolfrey include, Friday 14th at Abbatoir in Leeds and Friday 28th at Tribal Sessions All-nighter at Sankey Soap in Manchester with Slam, Ivan Smagge and Steve Bug. Would be nice to see some friendly faces…

That brings to end the news, hope you enjoy your weekends to come, and remember to behave yourselves…
