It all starts with Ken Collier for Delano Smith. Back in the 70s Smith was a protege of Collier. Although virtually unknown outside Detroit, Colliers influence on the Motor City's club scene was every bit as important as that of Ron Hardy and Larry Levan in Chicago and New York.

Derrick May and Juan Atkins cite Collier and his residency at Detroit's Heaven club in particular as one of the catalysts for Detroit techno.

This is the roots for Delano Smith. The influence of his former mentor plays a significant role in everything Smith does, including a return to DJing (Smith took an extended break from the decks for much of the 1990s) and a move into music production in the early 2000s, the latter of which led to the establishment of his own label, Mixmode Recordings.
