Your experience with producing at home (volume levels)

I tend to monitor quite loudly. Over the years though, I have slowly been knocking the volume levels down.

usually kind of quiet. probably too quiet sometimes.

nice to throw caution to the wind and blast it out sometimes though.

headphones are a slippery slope but i guess they're better than nothing if you're really careful.

another thing to take into account is how long you spend in the studio.

i used to be a 'lock myself in the studio guy' and spend 8 hours at a time, till i realised that everything i recorded after about two or three hours sounded shite.

now i record in short bursts, usually late afternoon, when my hearing is still fresh and my brain clear. and the rest of the time just do tasks like working on individual sounds, and technical stuff, that donest require much volume.

this way my overall level coming out of the studio is much lower.

when i used to work late at night for long periods, i was monitoring at much higher levels without realising it, and when i switched on my studio next morning, it sounded really loud and harsh, and i could tell i must be trashing my hearing. (and would have been annoying neighbours if i had any)

the idea of working on small sounds individually is a really interesting method. I have to do it, and maybe others do as well, cos I get too saturated if I work on the full mix constantly, and when it comes time to listen to it in full, if I have no element of surprise (i.e. if I;d already been listening to the full mix on repeat), then I wouldn't be interested.

Hard to explain, but I definitely find it use to seperate my time in the studio, and spend time doing fiddly boring work on individual sounds, or other types of exploration or experiments.

well i do have neighbours, but they are usually in Africa photograhing lions, next year i move to a remote barn in the mountains. can't wait.

Funny you should say that. I'm actually living in Zimbabwe now, and being forced to use headphones because my studio is in the UK. It sucks.
