Yeah I was thinking about that too. The kick is not that soft and rounded. I though he just put a lot of distortion on an 808 and made it sound like this.

I don't suppose any of you guys have seen 'Shape of things that hum'?
It was on channel 4 (uk) in the late 90's. Here is the one on the 808.....

But there are quite a few about various iconic electronic instruments. Only 10 minutes long and quite cool, i think.
There is one on the minimoog and the akai.
