How low can we put a sub bass in a record ?

Post by tintin2085 »

Hi all,
I'm searching to get a nice sub bass but I don't know how low i can go with it.
I actually have one that peak at 45Hz. Is it enough ? or a sub bass must be lower than that ?

Thanks in advance for your answers,

20hz is the lowest a speaker can potentially produce. That is totally inaudible though and only produced as straight vibrations on good subs.

33hz is as low as I go for a bass note and it's usually just one note per bar or 2.

i'd agree,

you can probably get away with 27 Hz, A0

normally i work in D, D# - 37 and 39 Hz respectively

if its going to vinyl, the cutting engineer will cut below 20Hz, or sometimes 25Hz but its not a steep slope, so the closer you are to the cutoff the more sub you will lose.

wow you guys are super brave, I am very sparing when going that low and will usually concentrate energy around 40-60 hz.

I just let the suggestion of bass happen below 40 with what energy is present in my low bass. I find it usually has plenty of wobble just leaving the remainder in.

yes sparing is cool, but when its there, it hits you hard on the dancefloor

Oh I have no doubt about it! I am just too chicken and still learning about mixing. Going too far below 40 is out of my comfort zone at the moment since I screw up the bass often enough as it is! :) lol
