Clandestine is the dance floor persona of Argentinian producer Hernan Grau. Releasing under his surname, Hernan has run through a tight circuit of German, Spanish, Turkish and South American netlabels including Numbolic and his own Miniatura and Shufflemood imprints. All this since just 2006, when he first began composing and producing. The trajectory of his meticulously-crafted catalog takes a more somber and reflective turn on his debut Thema release: The Leisure EP..
The first thing that struck us about this EP was how naturally it all comes together. The tracks have a skeletal elegance that feel intimate when accompanied by his conversational vocal selections. The Intro sets up this framework of simple groove, delicate melody and crystal clear spoken word vocals. It’s worth noting that Clandestine lets these vocal passages breathe without chopping them up into tools—the messages come through with their original meanings intact, rather than being filtered through juxtaposition or irony. The space between these elements holds Carolina and Balance together, with the former featuring a soft-spoken mysterious interview excerpt and the latter toting a loosely-wound low register Rhodes piano aimed squarely at the afterhours dance floor. Both of these tracks have been given equally delicate treatment by two of Brazils finest up and comers. Tchoumeen takes Carolina’s minor key introspection and lays a playful organ over top infusing it with enough bounce to bring the focus from the head and into the feet. Alvarado Ernesto gives Balance a bit of jack and bump in his reinterpretation of this already soulful and elegant track. Fuego closes the EP out with a more percussively adventurous approach that maintains the poise of the EP while injecting some low end into this high minded affair.
