you guys should also try to use really low-pitched toms with a bit of the usual eq/compression to get really deep & defined bassy sounds - i like the reverb approach but with toms you can get things a bit tighter and forward going.
But thats just to add another idea that i like of bringing some nice lowend to the darker sides of techno

"there aren't many problems which can't be solved with a kick drum on the first beat and a snare drum on the 3rd beat, and a whole lot of sub bass in the middle"
Setup: Macbook Pro 15" 2,5 • MOTU Ultralite • Ableton Live 8 Suite • NI Maschine • UC-33e • Novation Launchpad • Novation ReMOTE 25 SL Compact •

For me what helped a lot is the recent acquiring of a Vermona RetroVerb, which is a spring reverb with a lowpass filter and an envelope. It really helped me get that rawer sound. Also just using it to drive things gives a great touch. Now i'm on the hunt for a good analog delay
Following this, here's a shameless plug of a forthcoming remix of mine on Fantastic Friends Records featuring the Retroverb as well as a few goodies in action. Quite remote from their usual output, but i'm quite happy of the results and they were too
More detroit than berghain, but still used a lot of the techniques from this thread. Really quite some great tips !
