[M 90] Gaiser - Static Level
Jon Gaiser’s longstanding relationship with Minus has proven to grow in strength with each new release. From his humble beginnings exploring the Detroit underground, to his eventual transfer to the techno mecca of Berlin, Gaiser has developed a distinct and intricate sound and is now one of the world’s most premier electronic live acts. Gaiser has crafted exceptionally effective dance music through live performance, with the best moments from these shows moved to an official single. Two tracks of mind-melting mischief ride the crest of a wave between techno and house, with enough bizarre production trickery to scare children into therapy and adults into rehab.
Static Level is a trip into the insanity of late night repetition. Losing your mind never sounded so gratifying. Much like mental illness itself, ‘Static Level’ doesn’t make it apparent that things have gone wrong until it’s far too late. From as early as the first full listen, it’s obvious that Gaiser is the master of the subtle build; patiently modulating sounds and grooves so fluidly, it’s difficult to truly know when one phase has began, and another has ended. “Watch how he struggles with the slightest hint” whispers the shadowy vocal sample¬–it’s quite clear what Gaiser’s intentions were when he crafted this track.
Zebra Talk picks up the threads in a more heads down manner via a distinct jackin’ swing, keeping the groove as the cut’s primary facet. A perfect example of Gaiser’s unmatched ability to lock the dancefloor into a steady trance with fewer elements than most, the track marches at a patient pace, as an undeniably affecting arrangement of samples, FX and drums goes to work on the hips. As the track peaks a cacophony of metallic stabs get the reverse filter treatment, relapsing the listener into the darkened mind state of its predecessor. Confounding bell tones stalk the track’s final passages, once again conjuring the aforementioned dark energy.
Through the connection with his audience and accommodating his sound to match the best performances, these two tracks have been tried and tested, and are without a doubt some of the strongest pieces to come out of the mind of Jon Gaiser, not to mention from the Minus catalogue itself. Twisted, masterfully arranged grooves which mark the next step in his climbing career, pushing Jon Gaiser to the next level of underground stardom.… warping a few innocent brains along the way, and perhaps causing a few party goers to question their own sanity.
If you don’t like this record as much as we do, there might be something completely right with you… and that’s just wrong.
