Recreating This Pure Kick Drum

About a week ago I began learning the art of making your own kicks
from simple sine wave. I'm done with EQ'ing and Comp'ing 2 or 3 kicks
together to make my own. While I feel I'm above average when it comes
to sound-design, I cannot for the life of me come to terms with how to
recreate the following kick. The reason I want ti copy it is simple:
I'm a beginner when it comes to kick drum creation and the best way
for me to learn is load up a sample I like and try to mimic what's
going on there.

For starters, I thought I should state that I am a Cubase 5 user but
for kick design I'm working with Ableton Live 8 because Operator is an
extremely flexible synth. The thing is, I understand how to generate
waves without a problem; the problem I should state, however, is that
I am not sure of what other tools I'll need to generate something that
is loud and packs power. From what I've researched on other forums, it
seems like I'll need an EQ, Distortion, Gate, Compressor and Soft
Clipper plugins.

As far as distortion goes, what type is used for kicks? Tube, Fuzz,
Overdrive, Bit Reducer/Sample Divider?
As far as Gate is concerned I have no idea what purpose a Gate would
serve in giving a kick a thumping action.
While I know how to use a Compressor and realize that a Soft Clipper
is going to help me squeeze out as much dB as possible, I have no idea
whatsoever how to route these plugs.

The way I have them setup is: Distortion -> Gate -> EQ -> Compressor -
> Soft Clipper. Does this sound right? I know there may be "no right
way" but as a beginner I could really use some guideline!

Below are two direct .mp3 links to the types of kick I am trying to
achieve. I've supplied the same kick used in two different tracks.
I've also supplied a sound wave image of this kick I'm trying to
emulate zoomed in so that you can see what characteristics it has. I
would really appreciate any/all the help I can get!

And saturation, bit reduction, gating, comp and eq to taste. I find however the less is done to it, the better. It really just needs some subtle enhancing to give it more character.

I hope you don't gonna try to make disco kicks... In that case you might better mic or sample those kicks and layer it on a sine kick as character ;)

Opuswerk what is that exactly? KVRAudio is always down when I try to get on to it.

Those are some beautiful kicks!! I too wish i could figure out how to make them. I'd sample it, but there's sh!t in the way!!

you could also do things like this in audiomulch There is a signal generator called testgen in there, which could create
pur sine waves. You could automate his frequency and amplitude, to paint your own wave ;)

There comes an example file with audiomulch, called "MulchOnly5" where someone is doing this. Its not hard to this,
i find it quit harder to understand how to do it right :-D

kicks are just (mostly) sines...

the other 2 parameters you've to f*ck with is the pitch envelope and volume envelope. No hard deal isn't it ?
