Mastering Help

Post by lejockey »

I was wondering if anyone had any tips on mastering? I have been using a waves L316 multiband compressor and the waves Q8 EQ was wondering if anyone could maybe share some tips on what else I could do? I have been listening to a lot of my tracks and comparing levels etc to tracks I have purchased and trying to get it sounding the same. I also have a large heavy curtain right the way across the wall behind my monitors in my listening room.

Thank you

if any of your friends have released a song, ask them for an unmastered version. Then try and get it to sound the same as the finished product. This will help you gain a good understanding.

Master in the morning before your ears get tired.
Listen to your tune on different systems.
If you find yourself adjusting one single parameter for over an hour, go to sleep.
Get used to listening for TINY differences in songs as you change parameters.
Use automation if you have to, but not too much.
Look in the useful links thread.

@msfilter the idea of having a go on a friends track is really good, will get on to that asap, thank you. Also might be a silly question, but where is the useful links thread? I have searched for useful links but nothing specific came up. Am I being blind and overlooking something obvious?

Thank you
