New monitors: Which one do I choose?

Post by kakanox »

Since I blew my old monitors, and I am momentarily producing on a cheap-ass subwooferset, I am looking for new monitors!

I'm still tight on cash, so I'm looking for second hand stuff...

So far I found the following three options:
- JBL Professional 4200-series 4208
Specs: Frequency Response 60Hz-20kHz (+/- 2dB), Frequency Range 38 Hz - 21kHz (-10dB), Crossover Frequency 2.6 kHz, Sensitivity 89 dB SPL (1W, 2.83V @ 1m), Power Capacity Cont. Pink Noise 75 watts, Peak Pink Noise 300 watts, Net Weight 9.3 kg (20.5 lb)
- Spirit Absolute Zero
Specs: Frequency response (half space on axis): 55Hz - 18kHz, +1/-3dB, Crossover (4th order acoustic Linkwitz-Riley): 2.5kHz, Power handling (typical music signal content): 95 Watts RMS, Sensitivity (half space): 89dB/2.83V/1m
- Tapco S5 (active nearfield monitor)
Specs: Frequency Response: 64 Hz - 20 kHz (±3 dB), Lower Cutoff Frequency: +3 dB @ 64 Hz, Upper Cutoff Frequency: +3 dB @ 22 kHz, Sound Pressure Level @ 1 meter, 7.5 dBu into Balanced Input: 100 dB SPL @ 1m, Maximum SPL Per Pair: 113 dB SPL @ 1m, Distortion (THD, SMPTE IMD, DIM 100): < 0.035%

I listened to some Tapco's in a shop. They were sh!t.

Not sure about your other choices as I haven't heard them.

You really need to hear a selection of CDs through each of them to find out which is best of the bunch. Different styles of music. For instance, when I tried this, Kevin Saunderson's bass sounded the same as The Pixies bass on the Tapco's.

In the end I bought KRK V4 Nearfields. Then I added the KRK 10S Subwoofer. Brilliant.
