There are plenty of cheap hostels.. most of them in the red light or above a coffee shop. If you chose to go to these expect to be sleeping in a real hostel. So bunkbeds, loud and drunk brits and lockers.

My advice is: www.stayokay.com

Good luck!

if you want to treat yourself and aren't into getting woken up by the sound of some stoned mook puking all over your backpack/shoes check this place, it's a very nice budget hotel in the jordaan—away from the tourists—around the corner from a great little pub called die nieuwe lelie:

single room=45 euro

if weather is good you could consider camping in edam what i did once i wanted to visit amsterdam. you can get to amsterdam by bus in about 20 minutes I guess. this is as cheap as it can get and relaxing, edam has camping sites at the ijsselmeer.

I know it's not a hostel and its above your price range, but you can get your own room at a stay called "Get Lucky."

Contrary to the name, it has nothing to do with sexual flavors. It's ran by an american guy who is older and it's not shady at all. I think the rate was around 50 euros. Cheaper than a hotel, but pricier than a hostel.

I found the Flying Pig next to the Vondelpark to be a pleasant environment.
