good non techno music to clean your ears with

Post by oblioblioblio »

so, it's getting to that time again. apart from the usual suspects keeping it real and not really bothering what everyone else is thinking about, there's a lot of rubbish music that is apparantly doing the rounds on the edm scene.

in the spirit of being a complete music geek with nothing better to do with his time. these are some non techno records that keep my muscles twitching, my heart beating and my spirit breathing.

Sun City Girls - 330,003 Cross Dressers from Beyond the Rig Veda
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
The Olivia Tremor Control - Black Foliage
Fennesz - Endless Summer
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - How I Long to Feel that Summer in my Heart

feel free to listen, discuss or add your own recommendations!

gorkys have still got it, never got into animal collective, just never worked for me but lots of my friends love them.

a few non techno from me that i've been listening to lately...

1)franz hautzinger- gomberg ii
2)the soft pink truth- do you party....its kinda sh!t, but i love it
3)snd- tenderlove...still sounds amazing
4)kate bush-hounds of love
5)that portishead album that came out a few months ago
6)electric birds album on mille plauteuax a few years back and pretty much the mille plateuax back catalogue, especially for doing the dishes/work related things.

hmm 'clean your ears with' is a little hostile.

what would be nicer is to say that if all the faceless business is getting on top of you, then these are some records that operate on a slightly different frequency.

maybe you'll love them and maybe you'll hate them, but certainly they'll inspire a different reaction to the passionless preset twiddling that always seems to do the rounds when a music gets injected with a little too much hype.

and hopefully we can share a little of the music that we love that isn't strictly edm.

cheers! mark.

yah gorky's always do it for me, whether it's their whacked out earlier stuff, or their more pastoral & sweet tasting later stuff. they hit the spot every time.

animal collective I really really dig too. they've gotten a little more attention iin the pitchfork type crowd than is probably healthy (a bit like minmal techno actually :)) but they have a very unique energy to them. This seems to have dissapated a bit as some of them have started focussing on solo projects but 'Spirit They Gone, Spirit They're Vanished', 'Campfire Songs', 'Sung Tongs' and probably 'Here Comes the Indian' are magic distilled into listenable forms.

I'll check out the records you mentioned. quite ironically though for a man encouraging other people to make recommendations I'm terrible about listening to records that other people recommend.

lots of interesting movie soundtracks out there

jazz drumming is great for rhythmic ideas

-

try picking up a used instrument off craigslist

make some noises and sounds with it.

no you don't have to record it, just try something different
