D018 - Keith Kemp - Black Sun ep - 2008

Image

Keith Kemp is a turntable and digital audio software wizard. Kemp started his electronic
journey in the early 90’s as an employee of Record Time’s infamous “Danceroom” in Detroit.
It was here that Kemp began his collection of House, Techno, Hip-Hop, & Drum n Bass records.
Keith’s love for electronic music spiraled into a love of synthesizers, drum machines, and eventually
computer based audio software. Now he rules turntables and MacBooks. The audio presence of
Keith Kemp has graced many labels over the years - we are glad to have our first full release from
this exceptional artist. Oh yeah almost forgot, he did the artwork too.

TRACK BREAKDOWN:

"Brief Transit"
A ridiculously thick 2 note bassline enters the mix in the beginning of this track, laying the foundation
for the min-tech madness and trickery to come. Don’t think the bass is just going to sit still though!
It morphs and transforms with all the rest of the glitchy, slithery whatnots that Keith pulls out of his
magic producer hat. Elements appear and disappear, echoing off into the distance. Then comes the
hook - a renaissance acid line, never quite staying the same. This is a very engaging track, no repetitive
ableton loops going on here.

“Violent Eclipse”
Chuggy, tribal rhythms open up, with hand drum samples thrown in accentuating the organic feel of this track.
Jazzy in its variation of cadence and sound types, with the underlying beat holding it all together. Eventually a
sound reminiscent of both Detroit house and techno comes in takes the stage, taking all the attention. No
simple repetition here, it sounds like someone playing the keys. It fades and we go back to various players
throwing in their two bits. It sounds like an electronic drum circle, with all the participants able to produce any
sound they want.

quite possibly the best feedback we've ever read in the history of D Records, complements of Fred Giannelli aka The Kooky Scientist:

"Keith Kemp proves that he not only knows how to deliver 2 solid tracks but also that he knows who Boston's most decadent historical figure Harry Crosby is. Black Sun is well produced powerful dancefloor material and it's thematic references prove most importantly that Keith Kemp also knows how to read a book for inspiration when many of todays producers can't even do that.
