mmm protools le is the light version of protools delivered with mbox, maudio, ...
normally you cant work with it cause it works only with digidesign hardware (including maudio)

how about the standard pro tools...do they work without the hardware?

As far as I know, there are only 3 main types of pro tools:
- pro tools free
http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree/
- pro tools LE : accompanies Mbox and 002/002rack
- pro tools HD(tdm) : cost more than my car
LE operates the same as a really expensive HD system...there are
a few functional limitations that have disappeared since 6.7. the main
difference is that LE does not support the HD(old TDM) plugins that
run on the external processing cards supported by HD systems.
LE is also limited in the number of tracks and the ability to allocate
voices...but the tracks are only limited to 32 or 64...way more than I ever
need.
Besides PTfree, pro tools will not run unless it has an authorized digidesign
piece of hardware to access.

you need the hardware to run the software,
never seen pro tools free, but im sure its not that good, anyone disprove this?
so pick up your piggy banks and start smashing em, and especially if you want a hd rig,,
is a damn good editing program though, love doing audio/visual stuff with it
syncs up like a champ

this is what it says in the notes:
This version of DigiDesign ProTools digital audio software is based on the ProTools Free version that doesn't require additional DigiDesign hardware. Memory management code has been added to allow 32 tracks of audio and 127 midi tracks. The check that blocked plugins from certain manufactures has also been removed.
- Recommended System Requirements For This Version :
- Intel Pentium III.
- Windows 98SE or Windows Me.
- 256 MB Ram.
- Phoenix or Award BIOS (recommended).
- A large, fast, hard drive for audio.
- Known Incompatibilities :
- Some Sony VAIO computers.
- Some Hewlett Packard Pavillion computers.
- Cyrix processor based computers.
- AMD K6, K6-2 or K6-III processor based computers.
- Original Pentium processor based computers (Pentium I).
- VIA chipset based motherboard computers.
- ESS Solo-1 PCI AudioDrive Sound, video and game controller. This device can be disabled from the "Device Manager" in the "System" Control Panel.
- Neither this version nor the crippled one like some sound cards, most problems found occured with SBLive Cards and some other models.
- Also found, is that it works much better in very clean systems.
- For full compatibility details, check, www.digidesign.com/compato
