[tuningspork27] Hugo

Post by sierra_sam »

Hailing from Turin in Italy, Hugo was really young when he had the perception that music is something more than an expression of art. While he was smoking and pondering this dilemma on his balcony, surrounded by the industrial landscapes of Mirafiori blocks, he got this flash of inspiration.
After that, he lit another cigarette, then later had dinner. After that he he had a glass of water. Long after all of that classically trained jazz musician Ugo Basile fell in love with electronic music during the 1990s.
Hugo's latest productions are conceived through profound emotional feeling and especially awareness of non-ordinary mental spaces, like sadness during happy moments, or anger at weddings. Following the tradition of his spiritual fathers Hugo proposes that we take a journey into his style of production, and here, with his debut release on Tuning Spork, the boat to bring us on that journey is waiting in the port.
With numerous releases on labels like Tongut and Floppy Funk, it's a journey that promises to be entertaining and worthwhile, even if the seas may be a little rough. So jump on board with us for Tuning Spork number 27, a four track EP from Hugo.
A1: Sten and Adan: Hugo's Tuning Spork story begins with "Sten and Adan". This one rolls along with bags of percussion and rhythms underneath the surface. Prince style synth stabs perforate the beat making this one a seriously funky house track, and unlike other labels, when we say funky we mean that it sounds like funk. The George Clinton fans amongst you may enjoy this more than most, the Hillary Clinton fans should probably stop reading right now.
A2: Mascalzone: Here Hugo brings us his darker side, with deep slowed down vocals making incomprehensible statements behind a magically lopsided groove of acid key stabs and quirky synths. The beat is a perfect and deft disco thump, this is house music that makes deranged grooves fun.
B1: Cocodisco: This time Hugo drops a slow bassless intro that makes this track nice for opening sets. What comes afterwards is another cut of groovy and funk inflected house music with the modern twist that's needed. More freaky vocals are interspersed with lurid acid lines for another psychedelic house trip.
B2: Lunatico: Here it is time to put the heads down a little as Hugo takes things to a more peaktime place. This one is moody and funky as a staccato bassline morphs throughout the track, locking together with little techno xylophones to create a deeper and darker bomb for the early hours. Once again the vibe is still a little goofy, just as we like it here at Tuning Spork.

Digital Exclusive: Cacao: For all the digital minds and downloaders amongst you, Hugo has been so kind as to create two extra tracks. The first is "Cacao", yet another chocolate referencing slice of house music. This one keeps the psychedelic and bumping style of the rest of the EP, and like chocolate itself, you are going to feel quite full when you consume this. The melodies are buried underneath a dark bassline and more barely audible, bass heavy vocals. This one is going to fit right into the deepest, darkest moment of any DJ set, if this track really is chocolate, then it's that dark stuff that tastes like mud! Check it out.

Digital Bonus: Coola: The second digital present from Hugo is this driving acid house number called "Coola". A long intro that will cause people to scream for the bass drum to arrive gives way to a deep and trippy piece of house music that's got that 90s electronic house feeling to it. This one is sure to take things a little deeper and make people think a little, with some of Hugo's psychedelia replaced by some reflective strings and melodies. But don't worry, the bump is still here in a serious way!

And that concludes Turin native Hugo's fine first step on the tall Tuning Spork ladder. We're quite happy that this one has all the elements that make the Tuning Spork sound, the beat, the rhythm and the wry smile, so check it out and from Tuning Spork we wish you a happy and hot end to the summer.
