Yes, this is the proper use for ableton. A lot of people I know are using alternative controllers for ableton. It's the real time midi routing architectures that allow for it. You guys saw this frivolous vid when it came out right?

if you go to his site, he explains his sound is based off making his own instruments, which are basically all modified/home made guitar pedals.
