How long are your beats ??

Post by Kilevox »

Hi producers,

don't become scared, this isn't a thread like " How do I produce minimal ?"

It's more a pointed question about your length of the beats.

When you begin a track, I think the most of you begin with the beat.

How long do you make your beats ?

Just 1 bar with 16 steps and you loop that bar later ?
Or do some of you make there beats longer, like 4bars ?
Do you you have only one beat, which you edit with EFX later or do you make a lot of variations of one beat, which you set in a chain in the arrangement ?

When I listen to the most actually minimal tracks, I often thinks that there is only one/same beat the hole time.
But how do they make the alternation in order that the track won't get boring ?

Maybe some of you can post any ideas ??!!

Or do you meant 16 steps in 1 bar ?

i usually start with 32-64 steps for drums, that way you can put a little flair at the end of the loop. it all depends on what your going for though.

i often keep basslines and additional perc. in 16 steps.

Originally I was just using 16 steps. Now I'm mostly using 32. I'll then usually take that pattern, copy it and make slight variations, then chain those together.

Most of what I do is based upon 8 bar loops, or 128 16th notes. Cheers.
