[TSXTRA] Social Being - Free your mind

Post by sierra_sam »

Balearic is a word which few people really understand. It can mean whatever you want it to mean, but it has always been vaguely associated with Ibiza, hippies, deep tropical dance music, and British football hooligans who grew hair, showered less, and became DJs. But forget those 90s British for now, there that feels better! With this special release, which we have kept quarantined on its own Tuning Spork Extra label, we are bringing you that Balearic vibe with a deep and dubby 00s house music twist. And for us, this is THE record of the summer.

So prepare yourself for a massive collaboration project from the Social Beings. This is not some duo you've never heard of, in fact it's label boss Jay Haze (Fuckpony/Bearback/Krak Street Boyz) and his friend, modern day techno legend Ricardo Villalobos. What can you say about either of these two guys that hasn't be said, apart from making up something like "Ricardo Villalobos eats anchovies for breakfast" or "Jay Haze's best friend is a very old African woman". One piece of information which is true, unlike those ones, is that Haze and Villalobos are now huge figures in the house and techno world. And they are indeed Social Beings.

Their latest collaboration, "Free Your Mind", is an epic piece of sunburnt house music that is sure to blow many minds in the clubs, on the terraces, and on the beaches this summer. Some of you may remember a time when house music sounded optimistic, when it seemed that the party could never end, when rivers of dub and rays of melody burst through the misty depths of every track. Others simply call this time "the 90s". But with "Free Your Mind", Jay and Ricardo have recreated that vibe, with this cut of tropical, euphoric, Ibizan house music. This is music for the sunrise and sunset. It is epic, magical deep house.

On the 12 there are two versions of this inspirational bomb, the Original Mix, and the Guitar Mix. Both clock in at 13 minutes, but like all the best house tracks, they could go on for twice the length and it wouldn't feel wrong.

A1: The Original Mix: This begins this wild trip into the depths of the Ibiza jungle, with organic pulsing synths and clipped drums. This track is a long, long journey. Sometimes the path takes you up steep, difficult hills, only to leave you staring at huge valleys and rivers below. Other times you are stooping underneath trees and crawling through the mist. But mostly you are in a club, hearing this record and freaking out with your friends. Deep housey chords burst through the murky tropical vibe like the sun coming through the trees. Make no mistake, this record is a testament to everything that makes house music great. You find yourself in little dubby hollows and then soaring back out again into the blue sky, and you know deep down that there is no choice but to "Free Your Mind", and that there is no going back.

B1: The Guitar Mix: Guitars, an instrument that are in a lot more techno than people ever really acknowledge. For this version Jay and Ricardo take out the flaming Flying V and don the leather trousers. Well, not exactly. Instead it is an ever so subtle re-working of the A side, with soft electric guitar licks buried deep in the back of the mix. The vibe remains the same as the original, the guitars only reinforcing the Balearic hippie vibe of the hit in waiting that is "Free Your Mind".

And that's the lowdown on Tuning Spork Extra number one, Jay Haze and Ricardo Villalobos's, the Social Beings ode to Ibiza, "Free Your Mind". We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. And remember, Tuning Spork wishes you a great summer! Free your mind!
