BIOGRAPHY INTERNATIONAL DJ'S

° dj URBAN aka REES URBAN [/size]
_____ (Pro-Jex, Jackstar, Public Housing, Knedeep, CHICAGO,USA)
Image

Born in Detroit in 1977, Urban moved to Chicago at an early age and soon took a liking to the various sounds of underground music that the city had to offer. After years of buying records and mix tapes, he drew closer to the musical movement by landing his first job in 1994 at the Chicago record store, Frequency, owned by legendary house producer Rick Garcia. Since then, he has worked in several major Chicago record stores, including Hip House, the starting point for renowned artists like Angel Alanis, DJ Jes, DJ Sneak, Halo and Hyperactive. Following the footsteps of these giants, he first began playing basement and underground parties and has eventually gone on to headline events in the United States, Australia, Canada, Europe and South America alongside notables including: Ben Sims, Bob Sinclar, Gaetano Parisio, Green Velvet, Mark Farina, Roger Sanchez and Umek to name a few. After playing at Love Parade 2000 in Berlin, Germany; Danube Rave 2000 in Linz, Austria and going on a six week tour in Europe stopping in over 16 major cities he is a star attraction worldwide. His tour earned him a residency at Stammheim in Kassel, Germany; a top rated club in Germany in the year 2000.

After his recent return to Chicago from Los Angeles, Urban’s style has remained uniquely his own, ranging from deep house and jackin’ house to old school house, techno and ghetto. He creates an atmosphere based on the innovations and explorations of the earlier vibes that we all miss. As a producer and remixer, he has recorded projects for a wide variety of labels such as Dance Mania, International House Records, Moonshine, Music Man, Pro-Jex, and Tresor. His tracks have been consistently charted and played by DJ’s worldwide including Adam Beyer, Bad Boy Bill, Dave Clarke, Derrick Carter, DJ Dan, Judge Jules and Surgeon. In addition to his production, Rees co-founded record label Bunchlox Music with Karl Almaria. Bunchlox has been an outlet for releasing major house artists including: Hatiras, Mazi, Natural Rhythm and Tony Senghore. In addition, Urban has spawned two record labels on his own. The first, Public Housing, a techno and ghetto house label has releases by several techno superstars including: D.A.V.E. The Drummer, DJ Bam Bam, DJ Deeon, Mark Hawkins, Paul Mac, Slobodan and of course DJ Urban as well. The second solo label, Jackin’ The Box is a house label that primarily features stateside house producers. Releases on Jackin’ The Box include: Nique, Greens Keepers and Southern Roots.

It goes without saying that Rees Urban is poised in becoming a good deal more than he already is. As DJ Rush explains, “Urban, in my eyes, captures the culture, the excitement of the moment and is the real thing.” That being said, it is clear that this artist is indeed a work in progress; exactly what is required to remain strong in an ever-changing dance music industry.

° MARK HAWKINS
_____ (Uk, Crime Productions, Djax, Hörspielmusik, Jackstar, Uglyfunk)

Determination and sheer bloody-mindedness are probably 2 of the best terms to describe 26 year old Mark Hawkins attitude to music and indeed life itself. After cultivating his ramraiding djing style he committed himself to the studio, creating his own vision of the sound he wanted to hear. Before long he had gained the attention of Michael Forshaw, who soon gave him his opportunity for his first release in 1999.

By late 2000 he had hooked up with the seminal Djax Up Beats label, and in February 2001 he put out his first record with them, entitled "Ctrl Alt Delete" which was well received by the press and techno Djs alike. Throughout 2001 he had releases on labels such as Pro-Jex, Ibrahim Alfa's Automatic, Horspielmusik, and the first release on Grant Barber's Uglyfunk imprint, along with a second release with Djax.

He also played at various clubs in the U.K. and Europe including Uglyfunk, London, Test, Glasgow (Home of Dave Tarrida and Neil Landstrumm), the infamous "Neue Heimat" Club in Stuttgart, Germany, and Stammheim, Kassel, Germany on New Years Eve with Woody McBride.

2002 has brought more releases including a new e.p. for Djax, split e.p.s with Paul Langley and Michael Forshaw, and more performances in the U.K. France, Germany and Israel, and the creation of Mark's own night in his home city of Nottingham called Pneumatic....
