Linux software for Producing?

Post by focusShift »

Been running Linux for the past few months now, and would like to start playing around with producing again, just wondering what, if any software is available?

Suppose I could always duel-boot back into Windows, but rather not.

There are a lot of options for Linux, actually. Probably the most successful and well-known project is Ardour (http://ardour.org/). It's a pretty heavy-duty DAW.
LADSPA (http://www.ladspa.org/) is a pretty well-supported plugin API like VST. You'll probably be interested in any program that supports it. AlsaModularSynth (http://alsamodular.sourceforge.net/) looks like a pretty powerful synth. Jokosher (http://www.jokosher.org/) is looking like it'll be a pretty nice multi-track program a la Garage Band.

I haven't really messed around with any of these. If you try them out, let me know how it goes.

on a side note: (i know this is not going on here and i would like to keep it that way) people like to argue about which is better linux or windows. i always tell them it depends on what you are trying to do. trying to run a webserver? use unix. trying to get grandma on the internet? use winders.

that being said...

i don't think linux would be the best platform to produce under. i only say that because the leading companies in the audio software industry focus on deploying to windows and mac environments.

just my $0.02

my room mate uses a windows emulater. "wine" i think it is? runs the apps great from what i have seen (fl studio 6). I think it also depends on your linux setup.

if wine has come along way since i used it last then it would be a go i guess. but my question is why? why produce with linux? is there a benefit? if it is for pure geek enjoyment then fine. i understand that, i built my own openbsd routers for years even though easy commercial ones were available. i wouldn't think the cost of windows would be the issue if you can afford the cost of ableton either.

if there is a good reason to use linux to produce under then go for it. otherwise use the best tool for the job and save yourself some hassle.

let me add i am a complete advocate of FOSS and i feel wrong trying to talk you out using it but i just think that the best move would be to use windows or mac os and all the latest and greatest software as it was intended to run.
