line-in from mixer too loud

i recently got an intel macbook and have been happily making blips and bloops. however, i am trying to record mixes directly to the line-in jack and cannot get the volume low enough.

the slider in the sound preferences is at minimum and it is horribly distorted when recording at unity level from a behringer vmx 200 mixer. to get the volume down low enough so it does not peak continually in my recording software, i have to turn the main volume on the mixer down to the lowest it will go.

the resulting sound does not seem as good to me. it is also hard for me to mix with these volume levels going to my speakers.

is there any way that i can put something in between the mixer and the lappy to reduce the volumes? or is there a software which could do the same thing?

go to system prefrences. select sound. click the input tab. select line in.

the macbook pro has has two microphones...one pics up much louder and is made for recording without a real mic for programs like imovie...so little girls can have fun with their friends etc and not need a mic to get the sound loud enough...but what happens is bad when you plug a mic in and select the wrong input setting...regardless of what you do with the volume controls...try this and let me know if it works for ya.

ok, so I take it you have all the gains on your mixer etc set right...Have you tried a mic directly into the line in to see if its that? I would also check all the preferences on the software and make sure it is set on the right input.
