for the midi controller i would get the korg microkontrol

its portable...gots knobs and sliders and keys to make the pretty bits

traktor is nice for djing and scaleable - if you eventually go with final scratch, you can use it together. so there is true value there. Go for that with DJing.

Also, Reason is easier to get your hands dirty than fruityloops I think. I know a friend of a friend who uses fruity or did and it's got it's strengths but I wouldn't reccomend it unless you are already attracted to it for a specific reason.

as far as everything else goes, i have no real opinion. Ableton live for playing live, although a bit typical, is probably the best option... reason 3 is really unstable even on good computers.. I wouldn't really suggest using it in a live environment if you can help it.

Oh, and grab yourself a waveform editor. it'll come in handy. Audacity is free :)

The microkontrol has crappy digital encoders instead of real knobs. It's a nice piece of kit, but that aspect of it is very poorly executed.

that's too bad because the thing looks cool as hell. i just saw andy vaz equiped with one in cleveland a few weekends ago.

i'd stick to m-audio axiom or cme pro keyboards and controllers. both top for the money!
