I've got a macbook pro, and the core duo is fantastic. Live runs better on it than my desktop, which is pretty powerful and has more memory.

Regardless of which you choose, you won't go wrong with the core duo.

as far as i know ... ableton live is already compatible with dual core, but for the moment only for mac.
version 6 will be able to handle dual core also on pc, it is planned for the end of the sommer.
i'm waiting version 6 to upgrade to a dual core pc...
and i think it is the way to go

If you get a pc I definately would not go online with it. The last thing you need is a virus turning your pc into a brick with all your stuff on there. I would seriousely consider a mac if I were you. Theyre made to handle media, IE: audio and graphics. People complain about the price, but its like a cadillac vs a ford escort, you get what you pay for.

I agree about the macs, but it's just not an option. I'll drive the escort until I know it's time to impress the ladies with a caddy ;-)

re: dual core pc's... is there a huge difference between the 1.66x2ghz proc's vs. 1.83x2ghz?

would it be foolish to get the lower model if i have ableton in mind?

I don't think it matters...I just got the mac book pro...yeah it is bad ass but its all in who is behind the controls...My buddy has an old as pc laptop and he gets that thing to work the charm...I also see lots of big names with old titanum (spelling?) laptops and they don't have any worries...I would not recommend dell...they are junk...I have owned 2 (because they are real quick to give out credit) and man did I pay for it...I'd look at reviews and get something that is going to last and always buy the extended warrenty. Other than that...get what you feel will do the job pc/mac shouldn't matter...

i've looked all around cnet reviews and the dell 9400 1705 reviews REALLY well for the pricerange. i've always been anti-dell, but aside from the stuff already installed on the hard drive (which i will wipe clean anyways) it seems that they're better than ever these days. not saying you're wrojng, but just saying i did check the reviews.
they say that for that price mark, the dell is the best option with least problems.

well then I stand corrected...I have just had bad experiences and have also heard bad stuff...but sometimes companies get it together...I know mac wasn't always the best (like the first g4s)...so yeah thats cool...if it gets good reviews by a good source then it should be cool...
